"Memory and Learning: Designing for Memory"

    Patti Shank, PhD

    Learning Designer, Researcher and Author

    Program Summary

Look at typical workplace learning content and you’ll see issues that make it more difficult to learn, remember, and apply. Content that overloads memory. Writing that makes it hard to understand intended messages. Design that is confusing and hard to follow. Too few activities that we know are needed to promote application on the job.

Designing for memory means intentionally making it easier to learn, remember, and apply!

Here’s the (very) good news. Research offers instructional, writing, usability, and information design principles that show us how to make instruction work better for how we learn and apply. Patti Shank PhD is the author of Write and Organize for Deeper LearningPractice and Feedback for Deeper Learning, and Manage Memory for Deeper Learning. She’s an internationally recognized instructional designer, researcher, and learning analyst who makes these tactics clear and actionable in her books and workshops.

In this session, participants will apply research-driven and actionable tactics that help us:

    ·        Understand memory so we can work with it and not against it

    ·        Reduce needless mental effort

    ·        Make content clearer and easier to understand

    ·        Support remembering and use

Want to get the most from this session? Think of specific content you want to improve so you can think through the tactics with this content in mind. We know (from research) that we learn best when able to apply it right away.

      6:30 PM – 8:30 PM: Presentation

      About the presentation:

Have you ever wondered how a Leader Dog knows whether a traffic light is red or green?  Have you ever considered how a dog can decipher a McDonald’s from a Burger King?  Or how these amazing guides know the difference between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 at Chicago O’Hare Airport?

Harness the Power of Leadership will teach you and other professionals working in the business community foundational principles in leadership, management, communication, and team-building. The tools presented are based on training techniques Leader Dogs for the Blind has been using for 80 years as part of their mission to empower people who are blind or visually impaired to lead successful and independent lives.

The communication procedures a Leader Dog team uses to successfully cross busy intersections, find restaurants, and navigate bustling airports are the same techniques used by efficient and prosperous teams in the corporate environment. As the day progresses, you will see just how relevant these techniques are in your workplace and will learn how you too can successfully implement them in your daily lives as you advance in your career.

      Meet Your Presenter: Jeff Hawkins

Jeff Hawkins has been among the highest profile representatives of Leader Dogs for the Blind since receiving Leader Dog Gracie in July of 2012.  Despite being diagnosed with an inherited form of juvenile macular degeneration in his early twenties which ultimately caused his blindness, Jeff enjoyed a successful managerial career in the paramedic industry for more than 20 years. During that time, Jeff spent ten years as an Ambulance Operations Coordinator where he directly oversaw a team of 500 employees, and sat on several Detroit-area Emergency Medical Services committees, including the Medical Control Board, The Communications and Dispatch Advisory Board, and the EMS Quality Control Committee. Additionally, Jeff worked as a Field Training Officer for many years, taught telemetry and communication at the Paramed EMS Academy, and was the President of the Oakland County EMS Association.

As his vision continued to deteriorate, Jeff realized he needed assistance in maintaining his ability to independently navigate throughout his community and the rest of the country.  In 2011, Jeff contacted Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester Hills, Michigan to begin Orientation & Mobility (white cane) training. A year later, and after becoming proficient with his white cane, Jeff returned to receive and train with his Leader Dog Gracie.

With the help of Gracie, Jeff is today once again living the amazing life he always has.  Professionally, he is one of the most prominent representatives of Leader Dog, as he travels the country giving keynote and other addresses to thousands of people, organizations, clubs, and associations. His ability to vividly articulate the correlation between his work with Gracie and the communication skills sighted people need at work and in their personal lives is renowned in the personal development industry, and he looks forward to sharing those lessons with you through a unique and powerful delivery.

In addition to his professional successes, Jeff is an avid snow skier, a passionate ice hockey player, travels extensively, and has most recently discovered a love for wilderness backpacking.  Jeff resides in a Michigan lakefront home with his wife, Linda, where they spend summers boating, jet skiing, water skiing, and enjoying other water activities.

Jeff remains continuously passionate regarding public education on topics of visual impairment and blindness. He leads both by words and actions, serving proudly as an example of a person who is blind living an independent, active, successful, and extremely enjoyable life.
