SESSION DESCRIPTION: 

Unconscious or Implicit Bias are unconscious, automatic, learned stereotypes that influence our attitudes toward and relationships with other people. Unconscious bias can be the basis for all types of prejudice and discrimination. Through an instructor led presentation and a several interactive activities, the session will enable participants to understand the psychology of unconscious bias, including how these biases are formed and how they operate. Participants will learn to recognize unconscious bias both in themselves and in social interactions with others and will explore ways to consciously reduce this bias.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

In this session you will learn:

  • Define Unconscious Bias
  • Describe the relationship between unconscious bias and prejudice, stereotype and discrimination
  • Explain the harmful effects of unconscious bias on individuals, community and workplace
  • Explore sources of unconscious bias and how it develops
  • Become aware of unconscious bias in our daily interaction
  • Take conscious steps to reduce unconscious bias

YOUR PRESENTER:


Dr Swati Karve has a Masters in Clinical Psychology and PhD in Organizational Psychology. She has over 25 years of experience in teaching, training and OD consulting in India and in the US.  

In the US she practices through her consulting firm Arcturus Global Consulting. In India she has recently founded the Swasti Institute for Learning and Development, through which she offers professional development courses to individuals and organizations. Since April 2020 she has conducted more than 4000 person days of training. She has been a member of ATD-Detroit since 2012, has been a speaker for ATD-Detroit, and served on the board as Member at large in 2013-2014. She is also a published author for ATD.
