Guest Speaker:
Dan Carmody has been the President of Eastern Market since 2007. Dan grew up near Chicago but got interested in food production by spending summers working on a farm his dad owned in Western Iowa. In college he pursed a degree in Urban Planning and served as a city planner in Rock Island, IL early in his career. Between 1979 and 1989, Dan and his brother Gerry built and operated 6 bar-restaurants in western Illinois and eastern Iowa.
Late in his bar days he took on a “day job” running Renaissance Rock Island, the economic development engine for Rock Island Il, a position he held for 18 years. Dan came to Detroit to head Eastern Market and has not looked back. Dan is dedicated to regenerating one of Detroit’s most venerated spaces, working tirelessly to re-purpose vacant urban land and resurrect regional food systems.
Dan has also traveled extensively and taught all over the world, pursuing his passion for regenerating economies that have been left behind by globalization in developing countries. He believes that spreading wealth more broadly is the most important task of local economic development today.
