How to be real without sacrificing being kind (and vice-versa): Nonviolent Communication

Conflict in relationships is inevitable. Too often, we feel stuck between being kind and being real. Either we say the nice thing and don't really make our needs clear, or we say the real thing and risk escalating conflict.

But there's a third option - a way to be both kind and real. This third option is described in great detail by Marshall Rosenberg in his book Nonviolent Communication (NVC). In this session, we'll discuss some of the basic ideas of NVC, especially as it applies to authentical self-expression. And authentic self-expression almost always includes equal care and respect for the needs of both sides of a conflict.

You will achieve the following:

• Learning how to express what's alive in them through feelings and needs.
• Clarifying the difference between feelings (e.g., anger) and thoughts masquerading as feelings (e.g., I feel like you're selfish).
• Creating more ownership over our feelings by understanding that all feelings are directly caused by how our thoughts about the situation meet our needs.
