April Topic: Behavioral Ethics in Learning Design: When Does Influence Become Manipulation?
Location: Zoom Online Virtual Platform (link provided after registration)
Cost: Free for ATD Detroit and other local Chapter Members &
$10.00 for Guest
Description: Every learning experience influences behavior, whether we admit it or not. The moment we choose what to highlight, what to measure, what to reward, and what to make “easy,” we are shaping decisions. In this session, we will take a practical at the ethics of behavioral design in L&D, with special focus on nudges, default settings, gamification, and compliance training.
We will explore a central tension: how do we design learning that drives real behavior change without crossing the line into coercion or manipulation? Join us and examine common design choices that quietly remove autonomy, create hidden pressure, or rely on shame and fear. We will also highlight ethical alternatives that preserve dignity, trust, and transparency while still improving participation, follow-through, and performance.
Together, we will build a clear lens for evaluating your programs, stronger language for discussing behavioral influence with stakeholders, and a set of ethical “guardrails” you can apply immediately to keep your learning designs both effective and human-centered.

What's a SIG?
Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are small groups of members who share an affinity for a particular aspect of Talent Development. Whether it's a specific approach, a certain skill, or a common role in the industry, a SIG helps bring chapter members together to share in an interest.
Anyone can start a SIG - all it takes is a shared interest and a meeting place! To learn more, contact the Chapter President, president@detroitatd.org.
