GDASTD November Meeting

"The Power of Learning by Observing:

Using GoAnimate to Develop Online Instructional Vignettes"

Speaker:

Bill Solomonson, Ph.D.

Professor

Oakland University

Program Summary:

Much of our modern instructional design is based on the concept of vicarious learning, or learning by mimicking the behaviors of role models. However, the trend toward online learning presents a challenge: how can computer-based training provide learners the opportunity to learn through observing and imitating others? One solution: the use of instructional vignettes in online instructional design.

This presentation will provide attendees with both the background theory and the practical knowledge to create an engaging and effective instructional vignette. Bill will provide an update on the current trends in cognitive learning research as they impact the online instructional setting.  He will also demonstrate GoAnimate, a low-cost, cloud-based software that produces instructional vignettes that promote vicarious learning.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the theory behind the effectiveness of instructional vignettes,
  • Identify the opportunities that exist in specific instructional software, and
  • Discuss the development process and the required skills of using GoAnimate to develop instructional vignettes.
